1910-1912 M116 Sporting Life
Christy Mathewson (Pastel)

This issue featuring Giants Hall-of-Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson is one of the most important and valuable cards within the M116 set. Distributed from 1910-1912 by The Sporting Life weekly newspaper, the basic set includes 288 unnumbered cards that were issued in 24 series of 12 subjects. Additionally, there are over 100 different color, back, and team variation cards known. The cards from Series 1 (which includes Mathewson) and Series 2 were issued with both a pastel background and a solid sky-blue background. Finally, the set features three different back types.

Christy Mathewson was one of the greatest pitchers in the history of baseball. Over a 17-year career (1900-1916), he amassed a total of 373 victories - tied for third highest all-time. He compiled a record of thirteen 20+ win seasons, including four in which he won 30+ games. He had an absolutely incredible performance in the 1905 World Series, pitching three shutouts in the course of six days. In 1936, Mathewson was one of the first five players enshrined in the Hall-of-Fame.

This example is very well-centered, both top-bottom and right-left. Corner quality is superb, with just the bottom two showing a hint of friction at the tips. The printing on the card-front is boldly impressed, with a crystal-clear image of Mathewson and rich pastel coloration. The surface is clean and unabraded, but does show a modest amount of age-toning. On the back, the navy-blue printing is sharp and finely detailed. This is one of just three examples graded NM/MT 88 by SGC, with one finer.
