1912 T202 Hassan Triple Folder
Knight Catches a Runner
Walter Johnson / Jack Knight
SGC NM/MT 88

This issue featuring side-panels of Senators Hall-of-Famer Walter Johnson and infielder Jack Knight, and a middle-panel captioned "Knight Catches a Runner," is one of 132 unnumbered cards within the landmark T202 set. Distributed in 1912 within packages of "Hassan Cork Tip Cigarettes," the fronts of these tri-fold cards feature a black and white photo-image of a baseball action scene on the middle-panel, and a colored player-portrait artwork on each side-panel. The backs feature biographical write-ups and cigarette brand advertising. There are 76 different middle-panels, mixed and matched with 99 different side-panel pairings, to form a total of 132 different card combinations. Extremely popular with collectors, this is one of the most imaginative and attractive issues ever produced.

The primary player featured on this issue is Walter Johnson. Johnson was perhaps the greatest pitcher in the history of baseball. He enjoyed an absolutely dominant 21-year career (1907-1927), all with the Washington Senators. He was a 12-time American League strikeout champion, had 11 seasons with a sub - .200 ERA, was a two-time MVP Award winner, and was the ace of the 1924 World Series championship team. Johnson still remains the all-time career leader in shutouts (110), second in career wins (417), and is a member of the 3,000 strikeout club.

The highlight of this card is its absolutely spectacular centering. Typically, T202's are found with the borders out of balance on at least two sides. Remarkably, this example features near perfect border parity on all four sides. The print quality is outstanding, the coloration is bold and rich, and the corners show just minute frictional rub. The stoic image of Johnson is finely detailed and without blemish. The two side-panel folds are strong and crisp with no cracking or splitting visible. The card-back is extremely clean with all text and lettering very legible. This is one of just two copies graded NM/MT 88 by SGC, with none finer.
