1933 R300 George C. Miller
Type Two
Mel Ott

This issue featuring Giants Hall-of-Fame slugger Mel Ott is one of 32 unnumbered cards within the very scarce R300 set. Issued with pieces of toffee in 1933 by George C. Miller & Co. of Boston, Massachusetts, these cards received very limited regional distribution. Two distinct varieties of R300's were printed: Type 1 cards feature very bright coloration on the card-front, while Type 2 cards feature a softer coloration. Additionally, there are numerous small lettering differences on the backs of the two varieties. All cards feature a special mail-in redemption offer on the reverse, and many are found today with one of two forms of cancellation as a result of having been submitted to the publisher. The offered card is the scarcer Type 2 variety, and is uncancelled.

Mel Ott enjoyed a stellar 22-year Hall-of-Fame career (1926-1947), all with the New York Giants. He was a fierce left-handed power hitter who became the first National League player to reach the 500 home run milestone. He led his team in home runs for an 18 consecutive season stretch (1928-1945), while also leading the National League in six different seasons. Ott was a 12-time All Star, and a key member of the 1933 World Series championship team. He was elected to the Hall-of-Fame in 1951, and had his number "4" retired by the Giants in 1949.

This card has outstanding corner quality, commensurate with that of a much higher grade example. The edges and borders are very clean, and free from any abrasions or notching. Ott's image and the background artwork are attractively colored in multiple pastel shades. There are none of the black horizontal print lines oftentimes found on this issue, just a few scattered red print specks. The lettering on the back is very sharp and well defined. The right-left centering is approximately 60-40, while the top border is noticeably larger than the bottom. R300's are commonly found with very poor centering, many examples having at least one side with no border visible. This is the one and only copy graded EX 5 by PSA, with just a single finer example.
