1958 Hires Root Beer
Willie Mays
With Tab

This issue featuring Giants Hall-of-Fame centerfielder Willie Mays is one of 66 numbered cards within the 1958 Hires set. After releasing an eight-card test set earlier in 1958, the Charles E. Hires Co. followed up with their 66-card standard set. These cards were meant to be distributed within cartons of Hires Root Beer, however several intact factory sets have found their way into the hobby over the years. This issue is encountered with or without the redemption-offer tab that makes up the bottom half of the card. Examples with the tab intact are scarcer and much more valuable than those without.

In 1958, Willie Mays and the Giants played their first season in San Francisco. Mays had a career high .347 batting average, won his second Gold Glove Award, and led the league in stolen bases and runs scored. He finished runner-up to Ernie Banks for the National League MVP Award.

This example has been graded NM-MT 8 by PSA. It has the redemption-offer coupon intact. The corner quality is outstanding, Mays' image is clear and unblemished, and the color impression on the card-front is very rich and bold. On the back, the black lettering and imagery are very sharp and well-defined.
