1971 Topps Baseball
#600 Willie Mays

A key card within the scarce 1971 Topps semi high-number series, this issue featuring Giants Hall-of-Fame legend Willie Mays was designated as number 600, showing its importance within this very popular set. This was Mays' third-to-last standard issue, and is extremely difficult to find in high-grade condition.

In 1971, Mays was named to the All Star team for the 18th consecutive season. He led the league in on-base-percentage with an average of .425. And he was the first recipient of the annual Roberto Clemente Award. The Giants finished in first place in the NL West division in 1971, but were defeated by the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-1 in the league championship series.

This is an extraordinarily high-grade example. It is virtually perfectly centered, both right-left and top-bottom. The surfaces are absolutely pristine, with outstanding corner quality and not a single noteworthy flaw. The black borders are exceptionally clean for the issue, with just some minor as-issued edging notches. The printing is extremely bold, with deep coloration and no smudges or blemishes. And finally, the finish quality is superb, with an uninterrupted layer of brilliant gloss. Out of a total of 1,892 submissions, this is one of just 12 examples to be designated as MINT 9 by PSA - with none higher.
